North Korea, which has never tolerated any unauthorized spread of information, has been tapping such popular social networking services as Facebook and Twitter to wage a new type of propaganda offensive.

North Korea's propaganda machine has spread to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

The secretive country’s main government-run Web site recently added icons for Internet users to post contents on popular social networks and more easily spread online messages against South Korea and the United States.

Uriminzokkiri (“On our own Nationals”), the official Web site of the North’s anti-South office, the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification, has added six SNS icons, including Twitter, Facebook and South Korean portals, NHN and Daum, to its home page, according to South Korean officials.

The site (www.uriminzokkiri.com) shows news stories produced by the Korean Central News Agency, the North’s main mouthpiece, with icons linking to Twitter, Facebook and other portals.

“The move is seen as a bid to intensify its propaganda offensive and foster North Korea sympathizers in South Korea,” a government official said.
